The waterfront gets a lot of attention around here, but South Surrey also has some genuinely great forest and nature trails, and fall might be the best season to walk them. As South Surrey and White Rock realtors, here are a few of our favourites.
Sunnyside Acres Urban Forest Park
Tucked into South Surrey off 144 Street, Sunnyside Acres is one of Canada's first dedicated urban forest parks, protected since 1988 after Surrey residents voted to preserve it. The 140-hectare second-growth forest offers about four kilometres of trails, ranging from the fully accessible Wally Ross trail to more rugged routes through Douglas fir and moss-covered forest floor. It's a genuinely peaceful spot, and fall's changing light through the canopy makes it especially worth the visit.
Redwood Park
A short drive away, Redwood Park is known for its collection of exotic tree species from around the world, planted to showcase global tree diversity, along with a well-loved treehouse that's become something of a local landmark. It's an easy, family-friendly walk that feels a little different from a typical West Coast forest trail.
The 1001 Steps Trail
Closer to Ocean Park, the 1001 Steps Trail offers a proper workout for anyone looking for more of a challenge, with steep wooden staircases winding down toward the water. It's popular with locals looking to combine exercise with a genuinely scenic route.
Blackie Spit Park
Over in Crescent Beach, Blackie Spit Park combines beach access with hiking trails and an off-leash dog area, making it a favourite for anyone wanting a mix of shoreline and forest in one outing.
A Few Tips for Fall Hiking Here
Trails in this area can get muddy once the rain sets in, so proper footwear matters more in October and November than it does in July. Daylight also shrinks quickly this time of year, so an earlier start gives you more flexibility if you want to linger along the way.
Why We Love Sharing This
A big part of what makes South Surrey and White Rock such a great place to live is having this kind of nature genuinely minutes away, not a special weekend trip but something you can do on a random Tuesday after work. We love pointing people toward it.
