If you live on the Lower Mainland, you know the drill. The rain arrives in the fall and sticks around, and weekends can start to feel long. The good news is that South Surrey and White Rock have plenty to do when the weather turns. As South Surrey and White Rock realtors who have spent a lot of wet Saturdays around here, here is our rainy day list.
Hours, programs, and event details can change, so please check with each venue before you go.
Get Active Indoors
Swim at the Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre. This is one of the area's big family destinations, with room for lap swimmers and a leisure pool for kids. It is a great way to burn off energy on a gloomy afternoon.
Try the South Surrey Indoor Pool. A long-standing municipal pool with lane swimming, family swims, a dive tank, a whirlpool, and saunas. It is a nice alternative if you want something a little quieter.
Visit a recreation centre. The South Surrey Recreation Centre (14601 20 Avenue) and the White Rock Community Centre (15154 Russell Avenue) both offer indoor space and programs for all ages, so it is worth checking their schedules for drop-in options.
Lace up for a public skate. Surrey's arenas offer public skating sessions. Check the current schedule before you head out.
Slow Down With Culture and Books
Explore the White Rock Museum & Archives. Right on the waterfront near the pier, the museum is a classic rainy day stop, and you can pair it with a damp, atmospheric walk on the pier afterward.
Spend an hour at the library. The Semiahmoo Library (1815 152 Street), the Ocean Park Library (12854 17 Avenue), and the White Rock Library all offer cozy places to browse, read, and borrow. They also run regular programs. The White Rock Library hosts a weekly Games Club on Wednesdays from 3 to 4 p.m. with board and card games for families and friends, and a Mahjong Club on Wednesdays from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
Wander Uptown's galleries. Uptown White Rock has local art galleries and shops that are perfect for browsing on a wet afternoon. Hours vary, so it is worth checking ahead.
Warm Up With a Good Cup
A rainy day is the right excuse for a coffee crawl. Some local favourites include Islands Café, Dudes Coffee House near Crescent Beach, The Sunflower Cafe, Grounds & Greens, Caffè Artigiano, and Bean & Berry. Pick a new one, bring a book or a friend, and enjoy.
Watch the Weather From the Waterfront
There is something special about watching a storm roll in over the water. A waterfront walk on a drizzly day, with a good raincoat, is much quieter than in summer. Afterward, many waterfront restaurants offer cozy indoor seating and views of the bay.
Coming Up Indoors
Indoor White Rock Charity Flea Market. Saturday, November 7 at 15262 Pacific Avenue, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Mobile Library. On November 17 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., it visits the Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre, where you can sign up for a library card and borrow from its collection.
Weekly bluegrass jam sessions at the Crescent Legion, from 7 to 10 p.m. Check the legion for the day.
Rainy Day Tips
Dress for it. A good rain jacket and waterproof shoes open up a lot of outdoor options.
Build a combo. Pair a swim with a coffee, or a museum visit with a library stop, to make a full outing.
Check hours first. Winter hours are often shorter, and some programs run on set days only.
Do not forget the kids. Libraries, pools, and rec centres are made for restless little ones.
Why We Love It Here
It might surprise you, but some of our favourite days in South Surrey and White Rock are the grey, rainy ones. A cozy cafe, a quiet waterfront, and a community with plenty to do indoors make winter a lot more enjoyable. If you are curious about making this area your home, we would be happy to show you around, rain or shine.
